Vladivostok - city young. 144 years for city not age. It quickly became the
important economic and political center, due to affinity to sea trading ways and
borders with China, Korea, Japan.
Vladivostok is the terminus of the Trans-Siberian
Railroad, Russia's major Pacific seaport, and the main base of its Pacific
fleet. Industries include shipbuilding, zinc and copper smelting, and the
manufacture of forest products, processed food, and machinery. The harbor, kept
open by icebreakers in winter months, serves as a base for fishing and whaling
fleets. The Far Eastern State University, founded in 1899, is located here, and
the city is an important center of scientific research.
Vladivostok, founded as
a military outpost in 1860, grew rapidly after the completion in 1904 of the
Trans-Siberian Railroad. From 1918 to 1922 the city was occupied by Japanese and
Allied forces.
Being the home base of the Pacific Military Fleet, Vladivostok
was closed to foreigners from 1930 till the 1990's. The only exception was made
for US President Gerald Ford who met the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev in
Vladivostok in 1974. In 1992, for the first time, Vladivostok was officially
opened to travelers from other countries.
Today the city borrows all southern part of peninsula Murveva-Amur and is
washed by waters Amur and Ussurijskogo gulfs. Into a city boundaries enter about
20 islands.
Vladivostok - seaside city, here all is connected to the sea: history of

and fish seaports. The important role in the industry of city is played with
ship repair and shipbuilding. In city it is a lot of museums, 3 theatres, a
